2023 Week 8 NFL Injury Report

This article will be continuously updated through Sunday morning.

Sunday Update

Actives/Expected Actives

Inactive/Expected Inctives

Justin Fields, Deshaun Watson, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Daniel Jones, Deebo Samuel, Gerald Everett

Game Time Decision

This is in addition to a Tuesday update with transaction recommendations. Remember that these projections are an imperfect analysis working with the most current information and five years of historical data. If players practice in full, they’ll be excluded from any specific analysis and should be assumed healthy unless otherwise stated.

Quarterbacks

Brock Purdy - Concussion

Purdy practiced again, making this situation complex. Even if Purdy clears protocol, is it possible SF sits him anyway? We’ve already seen this with Jonathan Mingo and, to a certain extent, Deshaun Watson. Even if Purdy goes, there’s a 63% increase in turnover-worthy plays for QBs after a concussion. He’s not useable in single QB leagues.

Jimmy Garoppolo - Back

Jimmy G will make his return, but he is moderately volatile until he proves his back injury is not lingering.

Running Backs

Austin Ekeler - Ankle

This isn’t his high ankle sprain. Now he got rolled up with a lateral ankle sprain. His missed tackles forced took a hit in Week 7, and there’s no real reason to believe he’s close to 100% yet. Still, it’s Austin Ekeler. Roll him out in every redraft league but temper expectations and avoid him in cash, as even 2 weeks after returning RBs still only reach 88% of their pre-injury form.

Aaron Jones - Hamstring

Jones is off the injury report. Still, he was on an obvious snap count in Week 7, and it showed. Still, Jones could be a sneaky tournament play as his passing game involvement was still at his pre-injury levels. Reinjury risk is still very real, but he could provide a decent floor with a chance to hit his ceiling.

Kenneth Walker III - Calf

Walker didn’t practice all week with a calf issue. Obviously, being off the injury report is rarely a bad thing. But it isn’t always a sign that athletes are 100%. Still, we’ve seen Friday FPs result in reinjuries. Start Walker in most redraft leagues but sparingly in cash. The flip side is to take a flier on Zach Charbonnet in large-field tournaments and deep leagues.

Roschon Johnson - Concussion

Since 2018 RBs who are coming off a concussion perform up to their pre-injury levels. There’s one problem: we have no idea what Johnson’s pre-injury levels are. Johnson should play and be okay in Week 8, but that backfield will be difficult to decipher after D’Onta Foreman’s monster Week 7.

Jerome Ford - High ankle

Ford practiced on Friday, but it isn’t uncommon for RBs to practice after a high ankle sprain. If he's active, he's highly volatile.

Wide Receivers

DK Metcalf - Hip/Ribs

We nailed Metcalf’s status last week, but now things have changed, as the RBs are now banged up, and Tyler Lockett is limited by his hamstring strain. This entire offense is hyper-fragile as of now, and it may not be a great time to take any overs on the Seahawks.

Tyler Lockett - Hamstring

Lockett ran fewer routes on the outside last week and yet did not meet expectations. There’s no change in his route rate or targets per route, but something just isn’t right here. He’s a volatile start in Week 8.

Diontae Johnson - Hamstring

Johnson will likely play in Week 8, but after not practicing on Thursday, it’s clear the hamstring issue isn’t over with. He’s volatile in Week 8 until he proves it’s truly not an issue that will limit him.

Christian Watson - Knee

Watson was a full participant in practice, but it’s clear that he’s, well, fragile. But that’s OK. Plenty of WRs have been solid producers despite being frequently hurt. Understand that Watson’s history of hamstring strains and now recurrent knee issues make him a volatile start week to week. Still, he deserves more time to prove what he can provide to fantasy managers. He’ll be up against the middle-of-the-pack passing defense of the Vikings this week, which is a decent landing spot.

Tight Ends

Luke Musgrave - Ankle

Musgrave practiced on Friday, which is great. 80% of the time, pass catchers play after a low ankle sprain, but he’s not necessarily a lock yet. Check back in on Sunday, but as of now, he’s an OK option at tight end.
