Seahawks GM John Schneider said Thursday that Smith is "the guy" and fellow QB Sam Howell was brought in to be a backup, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
The Seahawks informed Smith on Thursday that he'll remain on the roster through this week rather than be released to avoid a $12.7 million contract guarantee that kicks in Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Smith completed 16 of 28 pass attempts for 189 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 28 yards on three attempts in Sunday's 21-20 win over the Cardinals.
Smith completed 23 of 33 passes for 290 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 30-23 loss to the Steelers. He added three rushes for 33 yards but also lost a fumble.
